Prisoners in England to be taught code

The hope is that the trials will eventually lead to a network of coding workshops in UK prisons. The programme is modelled on the Last Mile project in the San Quentin prison, in California, which has helped almost 500 offenders find jobs after release, with none of those taking part reoffending. That compares with a national reoffending rate in the US of 55%. Reoffending in the UK is estimated to cost around £15bn, according to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Minster for Digital Margot James said: “The government is committed to stopping the cycle of reoffending and a valuable asset to prevent recidivism is employment. “Equipping offenders with coding skills will help them into life-changing work and …

How do I feel seeing my records get broken? Inspired | Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

As the NBAs all-time leading scorer, I want to see my records broken as doing so is one more benchmark of human progress Every time Im introduced in a public setting, my list of NBA records is announced. There arent as many now as there were when I retired, so at least my introduction takes less time. But whenever someone closes in on one of my remaining records, especially the Moby-Dick as the all-time leading scorer, Im asked by dozens of media people whether I think they can do it and how Ill feel if they do. Its as if people think Im sitting home watching the games chanting: Miss! Miss! Miss! Actually, when I see these talented veteran players …

Melbourne, Australia (CNN)Cardinal George Pell, the most senior Vatican official to be convicted of sex abuse to date, has been sentenced to six years in prison for the “callous” assault of two choirboys in the late 1990s. On Wednesday, Judge Kidd said Pell’s attack on the victims was “breathtakingly arrogant” adding that the cardinal had assaulted the boys with “callous indifference to the victims’ distress.” But the judge said Pell was “not to be made a scapegoat for any failings or perceived failings of the Catholic Church.” Outside the court, survivors of Catholic sex abuse who had attended the hearing were divided on the sentence. Some felt justice had been done, while others thought the judge had been too lenient. …

Cheat. Bribe. Lie. Here’s how the college admissions scam allegedly worked

(CNN)The college admissions scheme revealed Tuesday is the largest of its kind ever prosecuted, federal prosecutors said, and features 50 defendants across six states, millions of dollars in illegally funneled funds and a handful of the country’s most selective universities. “One was to cheat on the SAT or ACT, and the other was to use his connections with Division I coaches and use bribes to get these parents’ kids into school with fake athletic credentials,” Lelling said at a press conference in Boston. A total of 50 people were charged in the case. Those arrested include two SAT/ACT administrators, one exam proctor, nine coaches at elite schools, one college administrator and 33 parents, according to Lelling. Here’s how the plan …

On behalf of the thousands of people impacted by child abuse we demand an apology.” Report …
